Lufthansa A340-600 First Class Review: Is It Still Worth It?

An honest Lufthansa A340-600 First Class review from Boston to Frankfurt: seat 1G, the eight-seat cabin, caviar service, sleep, Wi-Fi, lounge and whether it is still worth booking.

The Lufthansa A340-600 is not the newest way to cross the Atlantic in First Class. That is also part of the appeal. On this Boston to Frankfurt flight, the product felt less like a tech-forward suite and more like an older European interpretation of luxury: space, calm service, proper bedding, caviar, wine and very little theatre.

This Lufthansa A340-600 First Class review is based on flight LH423 from Boston (BOS) to Frankfurt (FRA), seated in 1G. The question is not whether the aircraft or screen feels modern. It does not. The better question is whether the whole experience still feels special enough to justify the miles, upgrade or fare.

Short answer: yes, if you value service, sleep, food and classic aviation more than sliding doors. If you mainly want the newest enclosed suite, this is not the product to chase.

Quick Flight Facts

  • Route: Boston (BOS) to Frankfurt (FRA)
  • Aircraft: Airbus A340-600
  • Cabin: Lufthansa First Class, eight seats in a 1-2-1 layout
  • Seat: 1G, centre pair
  • Flight time: around 6 hours 45 minutes
  • Best for: classic First Class service, caviar, bedding and an unusually calm cabin
  • Main weakness: older seat design and dated entertainment screen

Why This Flight Still Matters

Lufthansa First Class sits in a strange place now. It is not trying to be the flashiest product in the sky, and on the A340-600 it clearly shows its age. There are no closing doors, no giant screen and no apartment-style layout. The cabin is open, the design is restrained, and the seat belongs to a different era of premium travel.

But the flight still has something many newer cabins miss: a sense of occasion without becoming loud. The A340-600 itself helps. Four engines, a long fuselage and a small eight-seat First Class cabin create a very specific mood. If you care about aircraft, this already feels different before the service even starts.

That is the reason this review should not be reduced to a checklist of old versus new. Lufthansa First Class on the A340-600 is not perfect. It is also not finished as an experience.

Boston Lounge and Boarding

The trip started at Boston Logan, where Lufthansa operates its own lounge. The First Class area is not comparable to the Frankfurt First Class Terminal. There is no private security, no car transfer and none of the ground choreography that makes Frankfurt feel so polished.

Still, for an outstation lounge, it worked well. The room felt calm, the staff were attentive, and the dining setup was more composed than a standard business lounge buffet. It set the right tone without pretending to be the main event.

Boarding an A340-600 in 2025 already felt a little nostalgic. The aircraft is long, elegant and increasingly rare in long-haul premium cabins. That may not matter to every traveler, but it matters here because the aircraft is part of the appeal.

The Cabin and Seat 1G

Lufthansa First Class on the A340-600 has eight seats in a 1-2-1 layout. I sat in 1G, one of the middle seats. For solo travelers, the window seats will feel more private. For couples, the middle pair makes sense. In 1G, the cabin felt open but still personal enough, especially once the flight settled into dinner and sleep.

The seat is wide, supportive and easy to adjust. It is not a closed suite, and there is no hiding that the design is older. But it still gives you what matters most on a short overnight flight: room to sit properly, eat properly, and sleep on real bedding.

The A340-600 nose section also gives the cabin a different feeling from a larger, busier First Class space. There are no centre overhead bins, so the room feels taller and calmer. Storage is tucked into the seat area rather than dominating the cabin.

Dining and Caviar Service

Dinner is where Lufthansa First Class still feels most confident. The service began with an amuse-bouche and champagne, then moved into Lufthansa’s signature caviar service with the traditional garnishes. It is formal enough to feel special, but not so theatrical that the meal becomes stiff.

The starters were tuna, duck and salad, all well balanced. For the main course, I chose the beef fillet with red wine jus and seasonal vegetables. The plating was more understated than what you might see on some Middle Eastern airlines, but the flavor was excellent. This was not a meal built around Instagram drama. It was built around solid execution.

The cheese course and port wine were a good finish to a long dinner service. The wine list included two champagnes, four whites and four reds, with retail values ranging roughly from EUR 20 to EUR 100. I had Gruner Veltliner with the starters and a Super Tuscan with the main course, and both pairings worked well.

Sleep and Comfort

On a short transatlantic flight, sleep is the real test. Dinner can be excellent, but if the service takes too long or the bed is not comfortable, the arrival in Frankfurt tells the truth.

After dinner, the crew offered to make the bed. The bedding was thick, comfortable and much better than the age of the seat might suggest. I managed around two hours of sleep, which is a decent result on a 6 hour 45 minute overnight flight with a full dinner service.

The flight attendant also asked whether I wanted to be woken for breakfast. That sounds small, but it is exactly the kind of detail that separates a good premium cabin from a genuinely polished one.

Service

The crew were the strongest part of the flight. Lufthansa First Class service works best when it feels precise without becoming cold, and that is what happened here. The pacing was calm, the table setup was handled carefully, and wine refills or small requests were picked up without turning the cabin into a performance.

This matters because the hard product is not the newest. A dated screen is easy to notice. So is the absence of doors. The reason the flight still works is that the service compensates in a way that feels natural rather than defensive.

Entertainment, Wi-Fi and Amenity Kit

The in-flight entertainment is the clearest weak point. The screen is smaller than modern First Class standards, and the interface feels dated. If you plan to watch several films, this will not feel like a cutting-edge product.

Wi-Fi was included for First Class passengers and stayed stable during the flight. That is more useful than a flashy screen on a short overnight crossing, especially if you want to send a few messages before sleeping.

The amenity kit included Augustinus Bader products. It felt premium and better aligned with First Class than many airline kits, even if I still find Lufthansa’s Porsche Design Business kits more practical as objects.

What Could Be Better

The seat needs the most context. It is comfortable, but it is not private in the modern suite sense. If you are comparing it directly with newer enclosed First Class products, Lufthansa loses on hardware.

The IFE also needs an upgrade. The screen and menus make the product feel older than the service does.

The main course presentation could be stronger. The flavors were excellent, but the visual language is more conservative than some competitors. Whether that matters depends on what you value in First Class.

Who Should Book It

Book Lufthansa A340-600 First Class if you care about the aircraft, the service, the dining ritual and the feeling of a quiet eight-seat cabin. It is especially compelling if you can use miles or upgrade from Business Class without paying an unrealistic cash fare.

Do not book it expecting the newest First Class suite. This is not Emirates, ANA The Suite or a fully enclosed apartment-style product. It is older, calmer and more understated.

That distinction is the whole point. Lufthansa First Class on the A340-600 is not the most modern premium cabin. It is still one of the more satisfying ones if you like old-school aviation done well.

Verdict

  • Best for: Travelers who value classic aviation, polished service and a quiet First Class cabin.
  • What stood out: Caviar service, crew attentiveness, bedding and the atmosphere of the A340-600.
  • What could improve: IFE screen, privacy compared with newer suites, and main-course presentation.
  • Would I fly it again? Yes, especially on miles or as a sensible upgrade while the aircraft is still operating the route you need.

Final Take

Lufthansa A340-600 First Class is still worth it if you know what you are booking. The seat is no longer cutting-edge, and the entertainment system shows its age. But the service, bedding, food, caviar and quiet cabin still create a proper First Class experience.

For me, the charm was not that Lufthansa managed to hide the age of the product. It did not. The charm was that the experience still felt complete despite it. On a short overnight flight from Boston to Frankfurt, that matters more than another door to close.
